Magic cabbage experiment
You will need:
- two measuring jugs
- half a red cabbage, shredded
- a kettle
- a strainer
- 5 clear glasses
- a teaspoon
- bicarbonate of soda
First, put the cabbage in one of the jugs.
Boil some water in a kettle then ask an adult to pour the water into the jug.
Leave it to cool for 15-20 minutes.
Next, pour some of the cabbage water through a strainer into the other jug.
Add some cold water until the liquid is purple but transparent.
Add half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into the third glass and one teaspoon to the fourth glass.
Now, add a drop of vinegar to the second glass and one teaspoon of vinegar into the fifth glass.
As if by magic the colour of the cabbage water will change.
Why not end your experiment with some magical music?
Use a pencil or any wooden stick to gently tap the glasses and make up a song as you play.
Why not use some of the cabbage left over from this experiment to make a coleslaw topping for a baked potato?
Mix the shredded cabbage with a grated carrot and a tablespoon of low-fat yoghurt.
