Chives are a herb. They are easy to grow from seeds and very useful in the kitchen too.
Why not have a go?
Chives take about 12 weeks to grow. Plant them
between March and May.
You will need:
- a pot
- a saucer or a plate
- a watering can
- a packet of chive seeds
To decorate your plant pot you'll need:
- a pencil
- acrylic paint in different colours
- PVA glue
- paper plates
First, using a pencil, draw a funny face on your pot.
Mix the paint with PVA glue and use the different colours to paint your pot.
Leave it to dry for a couple of hours.
Fill the plant pot with compost and water it until it's damp.
Make sure you put a saucer or a plate under the pot to catch the drained water.
Put your pot on a windowsill in a sunny spot.
Water your seeds a little every other day.
Make sure the compost stays damp.
When your chives are about 15cm tall they are ready to be picked.
Use safety scissors to snip them about 3cm from the bottom.
You can keep snipping them each time they grow back to 15cm.
Did you know?
Chives have a mild onion flavour.
They are often used in Asian cooking.
Add them to your soups, salads and fish dishes or mix them with boiled eggs and low-fat mayonnaise for a tasty sandwich filling.
